The plain-language answer
When an emissions-related monitor records a qualifying condition, the vehicle may save a group of parameter values connected to that event. A scan tool can request that saved group through the standardized freeze-frame service when the vehicle supports it.
Freeze frame answers one narrow question: what selected values did the vehicle preserve around the recorded condition?
It does not replay the trip. It may omit the moment you noticed a symptom, and it does not prove which part caused the condition. Use it as context beside the exact trouble code, reported status, symptoms, and later tests.
Where freeze frame sits in generic OBD2
SAE J1979 defines the regulated emissions-related diagnostic services used between a vehicle and test equipment. The ELM327 data sheet summarizes Mode 01 as current data, Mode 02 as freeze-frame data, and Mode 03 as diagnostic trouble codes. That sequence helps explain the difference between three records that often appear together.

What values might appear
A freeze-frame record can contain supported parameters such as engine speed, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, calculated load, fuel-system status, or fuel-trim context. The actual set depends on the vehicle, controller, recorded condition, and supported standardized parameters. Do not expect one fixed checklist across all cars.
Units and labels also need care. A tool converts response bytes into human-readable values. That conversion must use the right parameter definition, byte count, formula, and unit. A precise-looking number can mislead when the tool decoded the wrong response or filled an absent field.
Why a field or the whole snapshot may be missing
- The vehicle did not advertise that parameter for the requested mode.
- The recorded condition did not leave the field the reader expected.
- The tool could not retrieve or validate the response.
- The vehicle returned no matching data before the interface timeout.
- Someone cleared diagnostic information before the record was preserved.
The ELM327 documentation notes that vehicles do not have to support every possible mode or parameter. It also defines “NO DATA” as a timeout without a matching vehicle response and lists several possible reasons. Keep unsupported, unavailable, timeout, and invalid-decode states separate. A blank field should stay blank.
Preserve it before anyone clears codes
EPA guidance tells inspection programs not to clear codes during the inspection and calls diagnostic codes with their associated freeze-frame data important for diagnostic work before repair. The ELM327 data sheet explains that a Mode 04 clear request erases stored trouble codes, stored freeze-frame data, and the code that initiated the freeze frame. It also resets other diagnostic information.
Do not press a clear button just to make the warning light disappear before a shop sees the record. Clearing may remove useful context and reset readiness information. A clear command also does not repair the condition that caused the code.
Build a useful technician handoff
- Capture the exact code. Include its reported status and the module or generic scan path that returned it.
- Save the full freeze-frame screen. Keep labels, values, units, and any unavailable fields visible.
- Record time and vehicle identity. Confirm year, make, model, and VIN context when available.
- Write symptoms in your own words. Note warning-light behavior, weather, fuel level, recent work, and operating conditions you observed.
- Leave the diagnostic conclusion open. Let qualified inspection and testing establish the cause.
A screenshot alone may lack provenance. Include the tool or app name, adapter, phone, and scan time when another person will rely on the record.
How to read the snapshot without overreading it
Start with relationships, not a parts list. Ask whether the values form a coherent record for the reported operating state. Compare each returned field with its documented definition and unit. Then compare the saved snapshot with later current data only when the operating conditions and tools make that comparison meaningful.
One unusual value can come from the vehicle condition, tool transport, response selection, decode formula, unit conversion, or missing context. It cannot establish a repair by itself. Warning lights, braking, steering, smoke, heat, fluid loss, or other safety concerns require the owner’s manual and qualified help.
Axlyne’s current boundary
Axlyne does not currently claim to save the standardized Mode 02 freeze-frame record. If another scan tool exposes that record, capture it before clearing diagnostic information and include it in the technician handoff.
Axlyne can preserve supported generic OBD2 observations within its current product boundary. It does not turn a trouble code or live value into a diagnosis, safety decision, or repair prescription.
