Limits of an empty scan
No reported standard code is not a whole-vehicle clearance. Recent clearing, battery work, intermittent faults, and systems outside generic OBD2 can affect what appears.

Keep the supported generic codes, reported status, scan time, selected vehicle, and connection source together. The record cannot authenticate a listing or title.

Can a seller hide problems by clearing the codes?+
Clearing codes can remove reported codes without repairing the vehicle. A generic code scan cannot determine why a code is absent or prove concealment. Ask for service records and use a qualified pre-purchase inspection.
Does a clean scan mean the car is good?+
No. A scan cannot assess a clutch, frame, brakes, tires, crash damage, or many intermittent faults. It reports only the supported standard generic codes observed in that scan. Pair it with a test drive and a qualified pre-purchase inspection.
What do I need at the car?+
A supported phone and a compatible ELM327 OBD2 adapter. Many gasoline vehicles sold in the US since model year 1996 have standardized OBD2 ports, but connection and available data vary by vehicle, adapter, and phone.
